Not Just Sacred Games, Netflix Has Three More Indian Originals In The Pipeline

Netflix and chill, India.

Aiming to target a larger audience and market in India, Netflix announced three new originals in India: Leila, Ghoul and Crocodile. The announcement comes right after one of the largest internet television giant released the first look of the upcoming Indian series Sacred Games, starring Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. The Sacred Games, which would be India’s first original webseries on Netflix, is based on Vikram Chandra’s critically acclaimed novel by the same name. The release date of the series is yet to be announced.

Elaborating on what the three new series would be about, Netflix’s Vice President, International Original Series, Erick Barkman declared:

“We are proud to continue to invest in original content in India. These three series, from the scary to the supernatural, represent the tremendous diversity that Indian storytelling holds for a global audience. We are thrilled to work with some of the world’s most talented writers and producers to bring these stories to life for India and the world.”

Like the Sacred Games, Leila is also based on a novel by journalist-author Prayaag Akbar. The plot for the Netflix series is written by the executive producer, Urmi Juvekar. The storyline of Leila revolves around a woman, Shalini, who upon her release from the prison after 16 years, goes in search of her daughter. As per the press release, “Set in the near future, this inventive, boundary-breaking story centres around longing, faith and loss.”

The second one, Ghoul, starring Radhika Apte and Manav Kaul in lead roles, is a gripping supernatural series based on Arabic folklore, ‘set in a covert detention centre’. Written and directed by Patrick Graham, Ghoul is the story of Nida, a newly-appointed interrogator at the centre turns in her own father for carrying out anti-government activities. It is later that she realises that a few detainees at the centre are not… from this world.

Set in Goa, Netflix’s third series, Crocodile is a young adult murder mystery thriller series. The summary of the show declares: ‘When her best friend goes missing, Mira sets out on her own investigation, uncovering secrets among her friends, romantic relationships and community.’

Last year, Netfix announced three originals: Selection Day, based on Arvind Adiga’s novel, a story about cricket and corruption; Again, a story of female detective, written by Marisha Mukherjee, set against the backdrop of Delhi, and Bard of Blood,  an eight-episode political espionage series inspired by a novel by Bilal Siddiqui. With the Bard of Blood, Netflix is collaborating with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
