How Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah promotes sexism in the name of comedy

Sexism, stereotyping and shaming are some of the most commonly used tropes in most Hindi TV serials. And Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is no exception. It has been on-air since 2009 and is one of the longest running TV shows. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has won several awards at Indian Telly Award, including Best Actor, Best Serial, Best Sitcom. The serial has always managed to feature in the top 10 most watched shows. But you might just have missed the casual sexism of the enterprise.

Quora hosted a discussion on Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashmah and asked for the review and if it is an overrated show. Quorans have noticed several important things. One of the users wrote, “How we accept misogyny and stereotyping as normal !!!”

He further wrote, “Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashma promotes misogyny and generally stereotypes both regions and gender roles”

He has an observation about the senior-most member of the clan, Babuji — “This patriarch of the Jethalal Household is the most dogmatic and self-righteous person on the show. He is so sure about what is right for all that their individuality does not matter at all.”

Another user explained about how the show is stereotyping at every level. Jethalal Gada, the protagonist of the show, is a businessman because he is a Gujarati and can’t do anything else, but ‘bijness’ apparently.

Moving to her better half, Daya Ben, who does garba on every occasion, even when she is all set for a crime-busting operation and it worked too. We are very serious.
