Vikram Vedha: Five reasons why this R Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi's suspense thriller is the best Tamil film of 2017

R Madhavan and V Sethupathi's latest release Vikram Vedha has witnessed a tremendous success at the Tamil Box Office

Pushkar and Gayathri’s new film Vikram Vedha opened to good reviews upon its theatrical release on July 21. The film marks the first collaboration between two of the finest talents of Tamil cinema, R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. Vikram Vedha‘s release was also important for Tamil cinema as the action-thriller was the first major film to be released after the theatre strike in the state against the newly implemented GST.

Vikram Vedha depicts the story of an honest police officer Vikram (R Madhavan) and a wanted gangster Vedha (Vijay Sethupathi). The film has ended a dry spell at the Tamil Box Office with its impressive collections. Here’s why InUth feels that this Madhavan – Vijay Sethupathi starrer is the best Tamil film released in 2017.

1) Vijay Sethupathi’s career best performance
Vikram Vedha completely belongs to Vijay Sethupathi and there are no two opinions on that. It’s surprising to see how the actor carried the film entirely on his shoulders. His portrayal of Vedha is so brilliant that you start to root for him despite Madhavan’s presence. Vijay is excellent in emotional scenes and has succeeded in making the viewers laugh with his one-liners. It won’t be wrong to mention that Pushkar and Gayathri have succeeded in evoking Vijay’s best performances of his career. And yes, he adds new dimensions to his performance in the film.

2) Great writing for all kinds of viewers
Vikram Vedha is not just a typical mass entertainer laced with violence. It’s a well-written film, with credits going to Pushkar and Gayathri for making a smart thriller that works for all segments of cinema goers. The script is top notch which keeps you glued to the screen till its terrific climax. The husband-wife duo deserves applause for making a riveting suspense thriller without the presence of item songs.

3) Madhavan – Vijay Sethupathi face-off sequences
R Madhavan continued his good act from Irudhi Suttru (Saala Khadoos) and delivered an earnest performance as police officer Vikram. Though the actor was overshadowed by Vijay Sethupathi’s screen presence in the first half, he is the one to watch out in the second half, especially the climax. His on-screen face-off with Vijay Sethupathi is a treat to watch where the latter begins to find flaws with former’s judgements of identifying criminals. The star duo’s performance is bound to give a stiff competition to Baahubali-Bhallaladeva duo.

4 ) Respectable roles for the female protagonists
Kudos to Pushkar and Gayathri for not reducing the female protagonists to just songs. Shraddha Srinath as confident lawyer Priya makes her presence felt despite Vikram Vedha being a male dominated film and her chemistry with Madhavan was impressive as well. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s role as Chandra is limited but does full justice to her role.

5 ) Technically terrific
Technically, Vikram Vedha is brilliant as well. The music and background score by Sam CS is amazing and Vijay Sethupathi is lucky to have one of the best background scores in Tamil films in his film. Cinematography by PS Vinod comes out well as Richard Kevin’s smart editing.

Overall, Vikram Vedha is a riveting suspense thriller with a great story and exceptional performances and has proven to end the dry spell at the ticket windows across the Tamil Nadu. And please don’t get surprised if you hear a Bollywood production house coming forward to buy the Hindi remake rights of the film from its maker S.Sashikanth.
