The Karni Sena controversy:

In January 2017, activists of the Shree Rajput Karni Sena had protested, manhandled and misbehaved with the crew of Bhansali’s Padmavati. They claimed that the filmmaker was distorting historical facts in the movie.  They had also damaged some cameras and other equipment while shooting in Jaipur, following which Bhansali had to stop shooting.

After the release of Deepika Padukone’s first look as Rani Padmavati from the film, one of the members of Karni Sena said that they will oppose the screening if facts will be distorted in the upcoming film. Talking to a news agency, Lokendra Singh Kalvi, patron and founder of Shri Rajput Karni Sena was quoted as saying:

Around 20 days back someone from Bhansali’s team had called and told us to see the film, but we asked them to show it to historians and intellectuals. After that we have not heard anything from them.

Meanwhile, after vandalising the sets, the founder of the community group, Lokendra Singh Kalvi also talked about Bhansali being manhandled in Jaipur, he asserted that even he doesn’t support any kind of violence. However, he will not let anybody distort history. He was quoted as saying:

Itihaas ke saath chhed-chhad hogi toh Rajasthan me ghusna band kar denge. Nobody has a right to distort the historical facts or to disrespect the honour of Rani Padmini or other women who sacrificed their lives and committed Jauhar (Hindu custom of mass self-immolation).
