Priyanka And Nick Have Featured On US Animated Sitcom Simpsons And Cue Gasp

Priyanka had earlier spoken out against the racial stereotyping of Indian-Americans on the show

Be it Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding or glimpses into their life after marriage, the newlyweds’ public appearances have excited the living daylights out of fans and paparazzi in equal measure. But who would have thought that it would land them a role in one of the most popular American animated sitcoms, ‘The Simpsons’?

Priyanka shared the couple’s animated avatars from the show on her Instagram page on Tuesday. The couple had chosen to have both Hindu and Christian ceremonies, which the makers of ‘The Simpsons’ took note of. The sitcom featured both their looks from the Hindu and Christian weddings.

One of the photos shows the couple standing together hand-in-hand as The Simpsons family looks on while the other photo shows them in their Christian wedding attire as the show’s regular character Homer Simpson officiates their wedding. Artist Rino Russon sketched their Hindu wedding artwork and Stefano Monda did their Christian wedding getup.

This comes after the show was embroiled in a controversy involving the character Apu, a recurring character in the animated TV series, who essays the role of Indian-American and the owner of a convenience store. After stand-up comic Hari Kondabolu called out the problematic nature of the character, the series drew flak for the way it portrayed Indian Americans.

Priyanka also addressed the controversy head-on when she spoke about how the character was “bane” of her life growing up. Chopra, who did her schooling in the US, was frequently asked as a teenager why she “didn’t speak like that”. She also asserted that it was time to remove the stereotypes from pop-culture. “Yes, it’s a cartoon. Yes, it’s a pop culturally super successful show. But that gives it more responsibility,” she had said in a show.
