'Nothing and no one can stop this film': Deepika Padukone on Padmavati

Deepika Padukone took right-wing fringe groups head-on at the trailer launch of Padmavati and ensured that the movie will see a wide release

Padmavati, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, has been at the centre of a storm for a long time now. Right-wing organizations, namely Rajput Karni Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, alleged the movie distorted historical facts and showed a non-existent romance between Alauddin Khilji and Padmavati. The shooting and release of the movie have hence attracted controversy but the on-screen Queen Padmavati said that nothing can stop the film. At the 3D trailer launch of the movie, Deepika Padukone took a stern stand on the release of the film.

The actress said,

Whatever I had to say, I said it. Whatever was supposed to happen has happened! Like I always say, now nothing and no one can stop this film.

Earlier, Deepika had voiced her anger when members of the fringe group, Rajput Karni Sena, destroyed a rangoli inspired by her look in Padmavati which took 48 hours for the artist to make. A few days ago, former Gujarat Chief Minister and Kshatriya strongman Shankersinh Vaghela, demanded a pre-release screening of the movie to ‘ensure’ that facts were not tampered with in the movie. He even warned of violent consequences. But it looks like Deepika is not paying any attention of what these people think of the movie and is sure it will see a wide release.

At the trailer launch, Deepika was also asked about her remuneration for the film. It was reported that her pay cheque was fatter than those of her co-actors – Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Smartly sidelining the question, Deepika said,

Talking about my remuneration is not exciting for me. I am confident and comfortable with what I am paid But let me tell you something and this is something I am really proud of is the fact that people like them (co-producer Viacom and director Bhansali) have invested this kind of money on a film like this and poster like this…that for me is hugely encouraging… this is the biggest film that Indian cinema has seen not in just terms of scale but in terms of budget and resources, and what is the poster behind it? For me that is the turning point for Indian cinema.

This is Deepika’s third collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Goliyon Ki Raas Leela: Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani. She said her character of Padmavati was different from Mastani in many ways. She revealed that while Mastani went into the battlefield to fight, Padmavati fought for her tradition, culture and passion. She added,

With Mastani, if I have to show a warrior princess, it is easier for me to have a sword, get a battle field, do horse-riding, and show exactly going to war is actually like. But how do you fight so much more than just a war? You’re standing up for your tradition, culture, heritage, passion and love, there is so much that is going on, how do you stand up for all that, just by emoting without any tools.

The trailer of the movie has fetched brilliant reviews and everyone has high expectations from the film. And now it looks like Deepika too is confident that her movie would connect with the viewers. Padmavati is slated to release on December 1.
