Salman Khan starrer Tubelight released across 5,500 screens worldwide on June 23. The Kabir Khan directorial has mostly received mixed reviews. Well, we would have expected that the feedback would not impact the film as it features one of the most bankable superstars of Bollywood. However, the news in terms of footfall at the theatres is not amusing.
The 1962 Sino-Indian war drama opened to 35-40 per cent occupancy on Day 1. It is the third best occupancy for any Bollywood film after Baahubali: The Conclusion and Raees. It is actually not a good thing for Salman as Tubelight did not face a competition on the day of its release. Still, it registered less than 40 per cent occupancy, Box Office India reported. Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees got lesser screens due to its clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and managed to get a higher turnout than the Salman Khan starrer.
Every year, Bhai fans eagerly wait for Eid-ul-Fitr as it is during this festival that the actor releases his films. Sultan earned Rs 36.59 crore on the first day itself while Bajrangi Bhaijaan made Rs 26.67 crore on the day it hit the theatres. Tubelight happens to be the biggest Hindi film release with 4,350 screens in India and 1,200 abroad. Hence, an occupancy less than 60-70 per cent doesn’t augur well with the stature of Salman. Overall, it is expected that the film will settle for anything less than Rs 30 crore.
It will be interesting to see how the film picks up over the weekend and the Eid day. Produced by Salman Khan and his mother Salma Khan, Tubelight has the 51-year-old actor essaying the role of a small town guy named Laxman Singh Bisht. He has a brother Bharat (Sohail Khan) who is enlisted in the army during the Indo-China war and goes missing. A distraught Laxman takes up the onus to bring back his sibling. The film marks the debut of Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and also features child artiste Matin Rey Tangu. Late Om Puri and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub are also in the film.
