Padmavati: Is Ranveer Singh romancing Jim Sarbh to show bisexual nature of Alauddin Khilji?

Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor starrer Padmavati has been in news since it went on floors. The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali

After playing Peshwa Bajirao with such intensity and conviction, Ranveer Singh is set to essay yet another historical character. Ranveer will be next seen as ruthless ruler Alauddin Khilji in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati. While there are many reasons to be excited for this film, which also stars Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, a new piece of information about this magnum opus has just added to the curiosity. If sources are to be believed, Ranveer will play a bisexual in the movie and Jim Sarbh will play his lover.

Alauddin Khilji’s sexual orientation has been a topic of discussion since time immemorial. Famous historian Devdutt Patnaik had once written about Khilji’s love for men in a daily where he mentioned how Alauddin bought a young boy for a thousand gold coins from Gujarat. The boy he bought became the dreaded general Malik Kafur, invader of Madurai (whose character will be essayed by Jim Sarbh). Devdutt further wrote that Khilji was unable to control his passions, was pedophilic and it led him to invade countries. Khilji’s search came to an end when he saw Rani Padmini, who preferred to die by jumping in a burning pyre than accepting his affection.

If the reports are true and Padmavati indeed explores Khailji’s sexuality, then this Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial will definitely set a benchmark and also spark a new row of controversy. Considering how intolerant people have become, many might have an objection to such a portrayal of a historical figure. Even now, the Indian society is not open to heterosexuality or the LGBT community and their stories are still frowned upon. Considering the taboo associated with bisexuality, we wonder how SLB would have introduced this in the story to make it aesthetic. As far as Ranveer Singh is concerned, by signing up for such a character he has definitely taken a  bold decision.

When asked about this character, Ranveer Singh recently said:

It was a very difficult character to play. I am a people pleaser, admittedly. I like to spread cheer and laughter. I like to keep the atmosphere light – even if it means making stupid jokes and acting silly and crass. But, when I became Alauddin Khilji for the movie, there’s no trace of that person. Some actors are that way, where the external starts to affect the internal. At some point during filming, everybody realized that at one point in the morning you’ll have Ranveer and the rest of the day will be Khilji. My whole energy changed.
