'Baseless allegations' says Nadeem of charges in 20-year-old Gulshan Kumar murder case

Nadeem Saifi lashed out at media outlets for suggesting he plotted the murder of Gulshan Kumar, 20 years ago

The assassination of music mogul Gulshan Kumar on a quiet morning on August 12, 1997, left the entertainment industry stunned. Kumar who had been steadily defying extortion calls from the underworld, was shot with 16 bullets. The murder mystery remains as yet unsolved, but one of the early conclusions from the probe pointed towards the involvement of Nadeem of the music director duo Nadeem-Shravan. After being accused of living under the protection of the underworld in Dubai, Nadeem Saifi has lashed out. The music composer of Dhadkan feels that he’s being turned into a scapegoat and plans on suing media houses for projecting he had something to do with the killing.

The one-half of the duo, who is residing in Dubai, said he fears if he’ll return to India, he might be arrested. He said:

There are no cases pending against me, but, I fear that if I come back, they will arrest me. I don’t want my family to be tortured. In fact, my parents are ailing, but, I am not able to see them.

Furious at media outlets for suggesting D-company’s Dawood Ibrahim protected him in foreign turf, Nadeem Saifi said that his lawyers suggested that take legal actions against them. The basis of these accusations is a phone call dated back to 2015. The intercepts refer to a certain ‘Ustad’, ‘a man wearing sunglasses’ and ‘a London friend’. Nadeem argued how do any of these intercepts paint a picture of him. He added:

I don’t wear them [goggles], and I am not an ustad. Have they mentioned my name in the conversation? When did I sing? I am a music composer.

And went on to say:

These are baseless allegations. People are trying to defame me. The story refers to a conversation tapped in 2015. Where were these guys for two years? Since they [Indian government] don’t have anything [development] in the Gulshan Kumar case, they are trying to frame me.

The developments in the Gulshan Kumar murder case have risen in the wake of the Central government mission of extraditing fugitives from abroad.

On the fateful morning, Kumar was on his way to a temple in Andheri when 16 bullets were pumped into him. Soon after the murder, police swung into action arresting 19 people. A charge sheet by police revealed details about the plotting of the cruel murder. Apparently, the seeds for the murder were sown in Dubai- at the office of Dawood Ibrahim’s brother. The meeting was allegedly attended by Abu Salem and Nadeem.

A Times of India report alleges that the owner of Tips company – Ramesh Taurani was jealous with rise of T-series’ growth making it a motive for the murder. Nadeem, it was suggested was unhappy with the way Kumar marketed the album Hi Ajnabi, by not giving him enough publicity.

Friends and family of Kumar revealed during the investigation he was getting threats for a while. Kumar, who is said to have presided over 45 companies and 30 studios across Mumbai and Delhi, refused to bow down to demands of extortion.

Despite being one of the most high-profile murders in India, there has been no clear conviction in this case.
