Bad news for Rangoon makers: Shahid Kapoor-Kangana Ranaut film leaked online

Rangoon starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan did not see a decent start at the Box Office after its release on 24 February.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon, one of the most anticipated films of this year, did not see an overwhelming response at the Box Office. The film starring actors Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut in important roles failed to translate the buzz to Box Office numbers. Adding to the woes of the makers, the film has now been leaked online, according to media reports.

Rangoon released on 24 February to a cold response at the Box Office. Over the weekend, the film is said to mint less than Rs 20 core. Obviously, the leak of the film would adversely affect the collections.

This is definitely not the first time, piracy has taken a toll on movies. Last year, Udta Punjab, which was already stuck in a bitter battle with Central Board of Film Certification, was leaked before release. The makers and actors confessed it was one of the primary reasons the film didn’t mint as much money as expected.

Quite recently, Aamir Khan’s Dangal and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees were leaked. Director of Raees, Rahul Dholakia had expressed sadness. He had tweeted, ‘Depressing and heartbreaking to see people watching on phones and online (pirated) when the film is made for big screen experience’.

Set in the backdrop of World War II, Rangoon is woven around the lives of Russi Bilimoria (Saif Ali Khan), Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor) and Julia (Kangana Ranaut). The movie got mixed reviews from critics but almost everyone lauded the performances of the actors. Though, there were many critics who thought the movie’s plot wasn’t strong enough to keep them entertained.

Now let us see what the makers have to say on this.
