BJP's N Biren Singh sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur

A former minister in the Ibobi Singh-led Congress government, N Biren Singh will be the first BJP leader to become the chief minister of Manipur

Amid the ongoing the political tussle in the state of Manipur, Nongthombam Biren Singh took oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur in a swearing in ceremony in Imphal. With this, Biren Singh has succeeded Congress’ Ibobi Singh who had been the Chief minister of the state since 2012.

Meanwhile, BJP President Amit Shah and Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu who was scheduled to attend the oath taking ceremony could not make it to the event after their flight developed a technical glitch and had to fly back to Delhi. Biren Singh who was former minister in the Congress-led government had joined BJP last year and was front-runner for BJP’s CM post.

Apart from Biren other council of ministers also took oath in Imphal. He had affirmed that he was aiming to lift the ongoing economic blockade in the state imposed by the United Naga Council. . He had said that the BJP’s only motto is “United Manipur”.

This comes days after the state threw a fractured verdict in the Manipur Assembly elections 2017. Even after receving more seats in the polls, Congress was unsuccessful in forming government in Manipur.
