Say hello to Anjali Ameer! First transsexual woman to play a lead in an Indian movie

Anjali will play the role of main protagnist in a Malayalam movie opposite super star Mammootty

It will be for the first time in the history of Indian cinema that a transsexual woman will play the role of main protagnist in a mainstream Malayalam movie, also starring super star Mammootty

Anjali Ameer, a 21-year-old model from Coimbatore has been caste for the main role in the movie ‘Pernabu’. Ameer underwent for a sex-change surgery in Bengaluru while studying there. Mammootty said that Anjali will be his co-star in the upcoming film. It was him who recommended her to the award winning director, Ram. In 2013, director’s film Thanga Meengal had won the National award in the best feature film category.

The movie will be made as bilingual in Tamil as well as in Malayalam and the dubbing work for it is in the progress right now. The name of movie ‘Pernabu’ will be in Tamil, whereas makers have yet to choose the name for the Malayalam version.

Mammootty, will be seen playing the character of Amuthan in the film and the other stars like Sarath Kumar, Kaniha and Suraj Venjaramoodu who also are the part of the film will be seen in important characters. Baby Sadhna, Thanga Meengal movie fame will be portraying the role of Mammootty’s daughter in the movie.

Anjali, was born in a Muslim family in Kerala’s Kozhikode in a Muslim family. She lost her mother at a very young age while her father passed away some years ago.

The film is slated to release in 2017, both in Tamil and Malayalam. As in the movies it is often seen stereotyping of LGBT characters ,therefore, it indeed is a huge step taken.
