At a recent fashion show in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah, drones were used to show off designer dresses, instead of models. Videos of designer dresses flying mid-air, suspended from unmanned robotic devices have created a flutter on social media.
The presentation was intended as a gimmick and designed to make the show stand out to buyers in the fashionable coastal city, Washington Post reported. However, in a country where women are still bound by conservative ideas about modesty, the move backfired.
While some users called out the organisers for swapping women with drones, others lampooned the video likening the floating dresses with ghosts or something out of a horror movie.

The organisers had decided to use the drones, the first such instance in a Middle-eastern country, to ensure the show was “suitable for the month of Ramzan”, Newsweek reported. Saudi Arabia had its first fashion week in April, with models taking to the runway in Riyadh for a female-only audience.
