#1: English is a funny language

The Old English word for “bleeding” and “blood” are sweating and sweat. The word “Blot”, which became the word we use today, was actually the word for sacrifice. “Bletsed”, which eventually became “blessed”, isn’t actually the antonym to curse, it’s a word which means to sprinkle something with blood.

#2 Ship-hopping is a thing

That the biggest naval invasion was Persia attacking Greece, and it held that record for hundreds of year until D-Day. Insane as F***. My teacher was actually teaching us about D-Day, and then mentioned this, so I learned a lot today! For those wondering, the Persians kinda got screwed because they didn’t have enough space to maneuver all those ships, while the Greeks didn’t have that many ships, so they were able to maneuver them well and basically “ship hopped”, destroying ship after ship after ship.

Fact Check: Persia attacking Greece was the biggest naval invasion until D-Day where the Greeks hopped from one ship to another in other to gain ground (6 June 1944 is termed D-Day, when the Allied Invasion of Normandy occurred during World War II.)

#3 Koalas are basically savages

Kangaroos have three vaginas and male koalas glue the female’s vagina shut after mating.

#4 What about pandas, tho?

White fur is actually better at retaining heat in cold environments because while brown or black fur has sections where the pigment goes, white fur just has empty air pockets, and having those little pockets of air is actually great for insulation. So while you may think an animal with black fur would fare better than one with white fur due to absorbing heat from light, white is actually the warmer colour.

#5 Math legends

The way ancient Romans/Egyptians did multiplication blew my mind. It’s easy to follow and as a dyslexic person, it basically changed my life.

Fact Check: The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus is one of the best known examples of Egyptian mathematics which was perfected through trial and error and is a trick which doesn’t rely on the binary system and which makes multiplication easier as expained in A Different kind of Multiplication.
