It was a fairytale ending for heptathelte Swapna Barman and her family on August 29. She had deservedly won the gold medal in Asian Games 2018. It was not just other athletes she competed with. She was battling a horrible toothache and running in uncomfortable shoes for her twelve-toed feet.

Despite all odds, she managed to win a gold medal on National Sports Day celebrated on Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand’s 113th birth anniversary.

Swapna hails from a poor family from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Her father is a rickshaw puller and her mother is a tea picker. Despite hardships, she was backed by her family to follow her dreams at a young age.

Though the 21-year-old has suffered injuries of all sorts in her career till now, the most prominent one still remains to find a pair of shoes for her twelve-toed feet.

On August 29, her family assembled together to watch her compete in Asian Games 2018. As Swapna created history, her mother burst into tears of joy. She got up and hurried to the family temple to thank the almighty for answering her prayers.
