Suresh Raina out of first ODI against New Zealand

Suresh Raina is down with fever

Batsman Suresh Raina has been ruled out of the first ODI against New Zealand to be played in Dharamshala. Suresh Raina is suffering from viral fever and he will not be a part of the team in the first match. Suresh Raina has not played for India for a year. He last played in October, 2015 against South Africa. Raina was ousted from the team after he failed to perform.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) confirmed that Suresh Raina will not be able to play the match. Suresh Raina was currently a part of Uttar Pradesh’s Ranji team that was playing against Madhya Pradesh. But, he didn’t bat both the innings.

Suresh Raina had also been left out for the tour of Australia earlier this year. He has also been out of the T20 team.  Suresh Raina was chosen for the ODIs after MSK Prasad assumed office as chief selector. Prasad rested  Ravindra Jadeja, star spinner R Ashwin and reverse swing king Mohammed Shami. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are out due to injuries. Mandeep Singh has been called as replacement. Karun Nair has also been brought in the team.

The five-match ODI series is starting October 16. The first match will be held in Dharmshala. India will be the favourites after a stellar performance in the Test matches. India crushed New Zealand 3-0 in the Tests. Ravichandran Ashwin, who scalped 27 wickets in the series was adjudged ‘man of the series’. After the performance, Team India became the number one Test team in the world. R Ashwin also became the number Test bowler. Ajinkya Rahane, who batted well through the series, also got career-best rank. He is the 6th best batsman in the world.

The team for the ODIs has been chosen keeping the long Test season in mind. Many prominent players have been excluded from the team for rest.

Suresh Raina’s replacement has not been announced.
