Stan Wawrinka - 'The Giant Killer'

Stan Wawrinka is ranked 3rd in the latest ATP rankings

Stanislas ‘Stan’ Wawrinka is a Swiss tennis player. He was born on March 28, 1985, in Lausanne, Switzerland. Wawrinka is currently ranked 3rd in the latest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.

Stan Wawrinka alongside Roger Federer ousted Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson to claim the Gold medal in Men’s doubles at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Additionally, he also helped Switzerland edge past France to win the prestigious Davis Cup title in 2014.

Wawrinka has 15 career titles to his name. He lifted the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. Stan has also qualified for the Wimbledon quarterfinals twice in 2014 and 2015. Wawrinka has approximately pocketed $26.5 million till date.

Wawrinka considers World No. 1 Novak Djokovic as his competition. Djoker presently has an overall record of 19-5 against Stan. Wawrinka has often been applauded by the Tennis fraternity for his calm demeanour and patient gameplay. He is regarded as the ‘giant-killer’ having forged a rivalry with British ace Andy Murray and Spaniard Rafael Nadal. American tennis legend John McEnroe heaped praise on Wawrinka saying: “He has the best one-handed backhand in the game.”
