Elavenil Valarivan on Wednesday made India proud by winning a gold medal at the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The 20-year-old from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu shot gold in 10m Air Rifle category with 251.7 points. This was the first senior World Cup medal for Elavenil who has earlier won gold medals at Junior World Cup in Sidney and Suhl in 2018. Seonaid Mcintosh from Great Britain finished with 250.6 points and won the silver medal.

The two-time World Cup gold medallist Apurvi Chandela crashed out of the qualification round while world number two Anjum Moudgil finished sixth in the event. With this medal, Elavenil has become the third Indian shooter after Apurvi Chandela and Anjali Bhagwat to win the gold medal at the senior ISSF World Cup in the 10m Air Rifle category.
