IPL 2018 Opening Ceremony Postponed, New Date Announced

Earlier the opening ceremony was scheduled to be held at the Cricket Club of India, Mumbai on April 6

The opening ceremony of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2018) has been postponed by a day, and now the event will take place on April 7, instead of April 6. This decision has been taken following Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators’ advice to cut the budget for the event by as much as Rs 20 crore.

Earlier, the opening ceremony was scheduled to be held at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai on April 6.

“A decided by the CoA, the IPL 11 opening ceremony, which was scheduled for April 6 at the Cricket Club of India, will now happen on April 7 at Wankhede before the 2018 IPL opener,” a BCCI functionary told The Indian Express.

He also informed, “Earlier the budget for the opening ceremony was Rs 50 crore (approved by the IPL governing council), now it has been reduced to Rs 30 crore. This call, too, has been taken by the CoA.”

There is, however, no change in the rest of the IPL schedule. Both the opening game and final will be played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The final will be played on May 27.

BCCI, though, is yet to announce the venues of the eliminator and second qualifier.

The tournament will witness a total of 60 matches and the finals will be played between the winner of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Qualifier 2.

After a 2-year-ban following the spot-fixing scandal, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are going to make a comeback into the cash-rich league.
