Watch: Brendon McCullum's 'hat' becomes the villain of Gujarat Lions, gives Chris Gayle a second chance

Brendon McCullum took a stunning catch at the boundary of Chris Gayle but he survived as McCullum's hat touched the boundary while he roll over

In the game number 20 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 10 between the Gujarat Lions and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle didn’t leave any stone unturned to smash the opponent bowlers. But this miracle wouldn’t have happened if Brendon McCullum’s hat hasn’t flopped while taking a supernatural catch at the deep. A misfortune for the Gujarat Lions took the toll in the end by sailing them to the losing end.

It was the last ball of the 8th over when Chris Gayle hit Ravindra Jadeja for a six towards the long0ff boundary while has was playing at 38 off 18 balls. The ball was going for Gayle’s 4th six of the inning when suddenly Brendon McCullum appeared in between the ball and the boundary line and took a mind-blowing catch. But after grabbing the ball in the air, McCullum rolled down along the boundary and his hat kissed the boundary rope. However, McCullum couldn’t realise this close contact and after getting up, he started celebrating the success.

Chris Gayle turned highly disappointed then and had he just started walking towards the pavilion, the onfield umpires asked to stop as they wanted to bet the clear picture of the episode. After having a look at the replay closely, the umpire gave Chris Gyle not out as McCullum’s orange hat was clearly visible touching the ropes.

The RCB dugout suddenly had a sigh of relief and so had Chris Gayle and his batting partner Virat Kohli. Gayle was back in the crease and then the way he played the rest of his innings was something out of the world. With 7 sixes and 5 fours, Gayle scored a phenomenal 77 of just 38 balls before he was dismissed by Basil Thampi in the 13th over. By then, the opening pair had already 122 runs for the first wicket.

With an extraordinary performance by Chris Gayle (77 off 38), Virat Kohli (64 off 50), Travis Head (30 off 16) and Kedar Jadhav (38 off 16), RCB could easily manage set a tough target of 214 runs for the Gujarat Lions to chase. Despite Brendon McCullum’s 72 off 44, Gujarat failed to defend the score by 21 runs.
