Eyeing a whitewash Virat Kohli-led team India won the toss in the 3rd Test versus Sri Lanka at Kandy and had no hesitation in batting first. India had a forced change as Ravindra Jadeja had to miss out due to suspension. Young Kuldeep Yadav got his turn. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul started off in a belligerent manner, hitting boundaries at will. Both the batsman got a reprieve each when they were dropped off tough chances. India went into lunch without the loss of a single wicket and looked to maintain a good run-rate throughout. Dhawan was going at a better than a run a ball. KL Rahul became the first wicket to fall when he departed for a well made 85. Dhawan went on get a ton. Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane did not make a big impact and India went into the close of stumps on day 1 at 329 for 6.
Saha and Pandya will resume India battle, Saha is fairly set but Hardik is quite new to the crease. Kohli would be hoping India do not lose a wicket in the first one hour on day 2. They should also look to set themselves small milestones and inch closer to 500. That is a figure India will be content with as Virat said at the toss that he expects the pitch to start tearing up by the end of day 2.
Virat Kohli departed for 42. Sandakan may have picked up the big two in Pujara and the captain but it was Pushpakumara who was the pick of the bowlers, he scalped three wickets and was playing the role of Herath in his absence.
