Let's Celebrate Smriti Mandhana, Who Helped India Women's Team Thrash The Kiwis

Smriti Mandhana, the ICC cricketer of the year 2018 for a reason

It was a walk in the park for India Women in the first ODI against New Zealand women at McLean Park, Napier today. Mithali Raj-led side registered a thumping win by 9 wickets riding high on Smriti Mandhana’s fourth ODI ton. Similar to the men’s game, Indian spinners dominated in Napier taking 9 out of 10 wickets.

The White Ferns posted a mediocre score of 192 as they were bundled out with 8 balls to go. In reply, Indian openers Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues did not seem troubled at all by the bowlers. The 18-year-old Rodrigues registered her maiden ODI fifty. She scored 81 runs off 94 deliveries and remained unbeaten.

Mandhana was her usual self. Her innings had 9 fours and 3 sixes. On the other hand, the 18-year-old prodigy, Rodrigues, did justice to her talent by finishing the match.

However, it was Indian spinners who outfoxed the batters. Poonam Yadav and Ekta Bisht picked up three wickets each. Deepti Sharma picked up 2 wickets whereas Shikha Pandey was the lone seamer to pick up a wicket.

India have taken a lead in the three-ODI series. The win holds importance as it is India’s first win after Ramesh Powar sacking and the series of events that led to it.
