Veda Krishnamurthy stuns Australian crowd with a full-stretch diving catch in WBBL 2017-18

Veda Krishnamurthy finally regained her batting form with a 20-ball 33 cameo for Hobart Hurricanes vs Brisbane Heat in WBBL 2017-18

India’s fiery batswoman Veda Krishnamurthy is creating waves in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2017-18. In a match between Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat, Krishnamurthy took a stunner in the outfield to stun the home crowd at Bellerive Oval, Hobart. She helped Hobart Hurricanes get an early and crucial breakthrough against the in-form Australian opener Beth Mooney.

In the second over of Brisbane’s innings, Nicola Hancock bowled one on Mooney’s pads. Mooney came down the wicket and flicked the ball towards deep midwicket. The ball went up in the air and Krishnamurthy had a lot of ground to cover to catch the ball. She dived and got both hands on the ball, completing the catch in the end.

The catch stunned the crowd and the commentators. The commentator commended the catch by shouting, “What a catch! that is a beauty… absolute beauty. That was one of the best catches of the tournament”.

Krishnamurthy, however, could not do well with the ball as she got picked off for 16 runs in the one over she bowled. However, she starred with the bat and scored 33 runs from 20 balls including 4 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 165.

She was also the highest run scorer for the team in the losing cause. Despite the early breakthrough, Brisbane Heat posted a score of 168 for 4. Opener Kirby Short scored the highest with 79 runs from 55 balls whereas Delissa Kimmince delivered with a handy 43-run innings from 36 balls.

Hobart got off to a shaky start as they kept losing wickets at regular interval. Later, they suffered a batting collapse as they lost 7 wickets for 22 runs. Krishnamurthy too played a reckless shot to keep up with the required run rate and got bowled by Haidee Birkett.

She has scored 94 runs from 7 innings so far and picked up one wicket. She is also the third player from India to feature in the league after Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana.
