In a country obsessed with cricket, a player has to go the extra mile to get noticed. And it would be safe to say that domestic cricket acts a breeding ground for future superstars. So, we would advise you to keep an eye out for Manipur teenager, Rex Rajkumar Singh. He single-handedly bowled out Arunachal Pradesh for a meagre score of 36. The left-arm medium pacer achieved the exceptional bowling figures of 10 for 11 in Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 on December 11.
Rajkumar bowled just 9.5 overs to demolish Arunachal Pradesh batting lineup. Interestingly, the 18-year-old picked up his wickets in strings. He was on hat-trick thrice during the innings. He disturbed the timber on five occasions, trapped two batsmen in front of the stumps, two edged it to the wicketkeeper whereas one was caught by a fielder. Out of the 9.5 overs, 6 were maidens.
It was a low-scoring affair at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur. Arunachal posted 138 in the first innings. In reply Manipur scored a lowly 122 and failed to take a lead. Despite a vital lead of 18, Arunachal fell prey to Rajkumar’s heroics and ended up setting a target of 55 runs. It was chased down in just 7.5 overs giving Manipur an easy win at the end by 10 wickets.
Only two players have managed to achieve this feat in international cricket — Anil Kumble and Jim Laker. Rajkumar becomes the fifth Indian cricketer to achieve this feat in domestic cricket. Subhash Gupte, PM Chatterjee, Pradeep Sundarem and Debashish Mohanty are four other bowlers who have taken 10 wickets in an innings. However, Rajkumar’s achievement is even bigger as it comes from a part of country where cricket is not as big a sport compared to other states.
