Somerset Achieve Rare Feat, Score Highest T20 Total Ever Without A Batsman Scoring 50 or 100

Somerset batsmen missing out on half-centuries in high-scoring chase turns into an all-time T20 record

It was a disappointing moment for Somerset County Cricket Club as they failed to chase down the target in T20 Blast clash against Kent. However, the side did manage to break a unique record on their way to score 226 runs for 5 wickets in the runchase.

The team managed to score the highest total in T20 innings without any of their batsman scoring a half-century or century in the match.

Three Somerset batsmen came close to breaking the record while chasing 232. Steven Davies scored 25-ball 45, James Hildreth scored 27-ball 45 and Lewis Gregory scored 15-ball 44. Gregory was the only batsman who remained not out at the end of the innings. Had he faced few more deliveries he would have got to the fifty-run mark.

The statistics of this match would have gone through the roof had Kent batsman Sam Billings not scored unbeaten 57. No other batsmen from Kent could register a half-century or century. There were decent contributions from all the batsmen barring Grant Stewart who got out for a duck.

The previous best on the list was 221/8 & 221/5 jointly held by Surrey vs Sussex and Australia vs England in 2004 and 2007 respectively. Similar to Somerset, Australian batting side had three batsmen scoring in the 40s including Adam Gilchrist missing the half-century by 2 runs.

What makes the statistics more fascinating is that usually when you see a big total on the board in a T20 affair, at least one batsman dominates the bowling attack. It is quite scarce to see three or more batsmen scoring in the 40s in T20 cricket.
