Dhoni is currently facing the heat after he failed to finish the game for India in the second T20I against New Zealand at Rajkot on November 4.

Dhoni, who came at the crease in 10th over after Team India were reduced to 67/4, was struggling to time the ball, rotating the strike and getting boundaries at the right time. Dhoni was able to score just 49 in 37 balls he faced. In his innings, he smashed 2 fours and 3 sixes. Team India lost that battle by 40 runs.

Following his Dhoni’s poor show, former Indian players like Ajit Agarkar, VVS Laxman and Akash Chopra opined that India must start looking for alternatives.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli came at Dhoni’s rescue as he heaped praise on wicketkeeper-batsman saying he is fit at over 35 years and performing for the side.

“First, I don’t understand why are people only pointing him out, I’m not able to understand this,” the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by cricinfo on November 7.

“If I fail three times, no one is going to point fingers at me because I’m not over 35. The guy is fit, he is passing all the fitness tests, he is contributing to the team in every way possible, tactically on the field, with the bat. If you look at the series against Sri Lanka and Australia, he did really well and in this series he hasn’t got much time to bat,” Kohli added.

Team India will now play now play three Test matches, three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and as many Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) against Dinesh Chandimal-led Sri Lankan side starting November 16.
