Virat Kohli and Co. magnificently kick-started the 5-match ODI series against Sri Lanka on August 20 in Dambulla. After winning the toss, the Indian captain wished to chase and invited the home team to bat first. The Lankan opening pair – Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka – gave a very good and fiery start to the team. They added 74 runs for the first wicket. However, the middle and lower batting order failed to tackle the Indian bowling attack. As a result, Sri Lanka could only post 216 runs on the board and were all-out by 43.2 overs.
The men in blue showed excellent agility on the ground while fielding in the first innings. Especially, skipper Virat Kohli whose outstanding efforts brought up the dismissal of Lankan batsman Chamara Kapugedera.
It happened during the 34th over when Sri Lanka’s 169/4. The home team was already struggling against the Indian spin attack and were looking for a good partnership to develop. Angelo Mathews was the batsman who defended a delivery by Jasprit Bumrah. However, Kapugedera, who was at the non-striker’s end, called up for a quick single. By the time the batsmen ran to steal a run, Virat Kohli picked the ball from the covers area, ran towards the striker’s end, dived and threw the ball. His throw was so perfect that the ball dislodged the bails before Kapugedera could cross the crease.
