ICC Champions Trophy 2017, ENG V BAN: Eoin Morgan ensured that he kept up with the run rate and provided ample support to Root

England, the hosts took on Bangladesh in the opener of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The hosts won the toss and opted to field first, probably taking into consideration the weather conditions. Bangladesh were lucky but they also played with a cool head at the start which was very important from their point of view, after their dismal surrender to India in their last game. Soumya Sarkar finally departed for a well-made 28. But there was no stopping Tamim Iqbal as he then upped the ante along with Imrul Kayes who departed for 19 runs. Then the captain Mushfiqur Rahim walked out and counter-attacked England along with a set Tamim who stepped up a notch. They played till the 45th over before Tamim finally departed for a splendid 128, the highest by a Bangladeshi in an ICC tournament.

Bangladesh managed to put up a healthy 305 for England to chase. Liam Plunkett was the pick of the English attack, he picked up four wickets. Jake Ball was expensive, he gave away 82 runs in his 10 overs.

England then resumed chase and lost a wicket up early, Jason Roy fell to a brilliant catch by Mustafizur Rahman. That is when Joe Root and Alex Hales brought the chase back on track with classy knocks, Hales was dismissed for 95. But that did no harm to their chase as Eoin Morgan got the chase going along with a Root in sublime touch. Root went on to get an artistic 100, without shedding a sweat. Mind you he was carrying a niggle and was hobbling.

Eoin Morgan ensured that he kept up with the run rate and provided ample support to Root. England never looked in a spot of bother and that is what was stand out, Bangladesh have already shown they batting or bowling can be hot on days and cold on days.

Root also brought up his highest score in the process and it was also the first time a team had got over 300 runs chasing.
