AB de Villiers breaks Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Shahid Afridi's records after scoring 176 against Bangladesh

With 7 sixes and 15 fours, AB de Villiers played an extraordinary knock of 176 runs off 101 balls. He also bagged the Player of the Match award

AB De Villiers has once again proved that why he is one of the most dynamic batsmen of the recent era. In the second ODI against Bangladesh, de Villiers smashed a ferocious 68-ball century and ended up scoring a total of 176 runs off just 101 balls including 7 sixes and 15 fours. He might have crossed the 200-run benchmark and become the 6th batsman on earth to get a double century in ODIs. But Rubel Hossain dismissed him in the 48th over. The Proteas posted a huge score of 353 runs by the end of 50 overs. In return, the entire Bangladesh batting line-up collapsed after scoring 259 runs and lost the game by 104 runs and the series as well.

de Villiers not only bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award but also surpassed former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi in terms of scoring centuries in less than 70 balls. He has now 6 tons in his kitty which came up in less than 70 balls. Shahid Afridi and Virender Sehwag have four such hundreds each.He even went past Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and who has 24 centuries at an S/R of 100+. AB’s this century was his 25th.

AB has also surpassed former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum in terms of the number of sixes hit in ODIs. de Villiers hit 7 sixes in the second ODI against Bangladesh and now his total sixes in ODIs are 201. Whereas McCullum had hit 200 sixes in his career.

  • De Villiers’ 176-run knock is the 4th highest individual innings for a South African in ODI cricket. This is also the 3rd highest individual ODI innings for any player against Bangladesh.
  • During his 176-run knock coming off 104 balls, his strike rate was 169.23. Only Shane Watson (185* off 112 at a strike rate of 192.7 against Bangladesh in 2011) scored more runs than De Villiers in an ODI innings at a better S/R.
  • His 68-ball century is the 8th fastest in ODI cricket for South Africa. Surprisingly, six of the top eight fastest ODI hundreds by South Africans are by De Villiers.
