Bangladesh Women Cricketers Turn 'Lakhpati' After Beating Indian Eves In Asia Cup Final

BCB announced a 20 million taka (USD 236,000) cash reward for the team and also promised to review the players' salaries

On June 10, Bangladesh women cricketers created history after they beat six-time defending champions India in the final of the Women’s Asia Cup Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Bangladesh became the first side ever to beat India in the group stage of the tournament before repeating the feat in the tense final.

As a mark of their achievement, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced cash rewards of 20 million taka (USD 236,000) for the team and also promised to review their salaries.

“Each player will get one million taka ( USD14,800) as a cash reward,” BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP on Tuesday. About USD 75,000 will be shared by the coaching and management staff, he added.

The BCB will review the salary and match fees of contracted women players this week, Yunus said. Currently, they earn a maximum 30,000 taka (USD 445) each month plus USD 100 as match fee for an international match.

On their return, the women players were garlanded by a welcoming committee that included government officials and members of the Bangladesh men’s team.

In the final, after electing to field, Bangladeshi bowlers justified their captain Salma Khatun’s decision as they reduced India to 112/9 in the first nine overs. Bangladesh then managed to get over the line in the final ball of their innings.
