Away from Ashes 2017 action, Ben Stokes hits a 47-ball 93 in a T20 match in New Zealand — WATCH

Ben Stokes missed out on his maiden century in New Zealand domestic cricket, getting out in the final over of the innings while trying to hit a bit-shot

Ben Stokes is away from the Ashes 2017-18 action as England struggles to retain the trophy but the former vice-caption of the English Test team is making it count in the shortest format of the game. The exiled Stokes has been playing for Canterbury in New Zealand’s domestic cricket circuit. The all-rounder did not make the best debut as he got out after scoring just 2 runs and 32 runs in three games. But Stokes is a T20 specialist and he has proven it yet again in a Super Smash 2017-18 match between Canterbury and Otago.

Stokes scored 93 runs from 47 balls with the help of 6 fours and 7 sixes. He came to bat when Canterbury lost two quick wickets in the powerplay overs. Wickets kept falling from the other end but Stokes carried on his power-hitting. He completed his half-century in just 29 balls in the 14th over of his innings. However, he missed out on a century as he got out on the fourth ball of the final over of the innings.

Here’s the video of one of the shots hit by Stokes in his lightning-quick innings –

While Stokes was wreaking havoc, Otago bowler Jacob Duffy picked up a five-wicket haul. Stokes single-handedly took the score to 217 for 9.

Stokes did damage with the ball too as he picked up the wicket of Otago opener Rob Nicol. Otago could not pose a threat to the total as they got bundled out for 83 runs in the 12th over of the innings. Canterbury won the match by 124 runs and Stokes was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ for his innings.

Stokes has been provisionally named in England’s ODI squad until he gets clear of all the charges of the Bristol fiasco. Stokes was arrested after a video his ‘street brawl’ was posted on the internet. That is the sole reason why he is not playing in the Ashes 2017-18 which is clearly affecting England who have lost two Tests in a row.
