Very rarely do we see Indian films delving into brother and sister relationship. In fact, for the longest time the brother and the sister’s roles were confined to the celebration of the festival of Rakshabandhan. The very foundation of the relationship, in these films was the fact that the sister needed protection and the brother must protect the sister. It took us a lot of effort to find out those films where the brother and sister relationship has been shown with a touch of reality, where sisters are more than a princess who needs protection and brothers are just not muscle flexing dabbangs always out to protect their sisters from the roadside romeo. These films beautifully capture the deep emotional dependence that brothers have on their sisters, when the rest of the world refuses to stand by them.

1. Juhi Chawla in My Brother Nikhil:
Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri’s on-screen brother-sister bond has sets major sibling goals. Juhi supports her brother after he gets diagnosed with HIV. When he gets ousted from both the community and family, it’s only his sister who stands by his side.
2. Aishwarya Rai in Sarbjit:
In Sarbjit, Sarbjit Singh aka Randeep Hooda accidentally crosses the border and reaches Pakistan. Aishwarya Rai who essayed the character of Dalbeer Kaur leaves no stone unturned to find his brother, help him get justice and bring him back home. The film portrays the intense unbreakable bond between a brother and sister.
3. Shweta Prasad in Iqbal:
Unlike how elder siblings usually take charge, it was refreshing to see Shweta Prasad steer the relationship in Iqbal despite being the younger sibling. She stood by her speech and hearing impaired elder brother and helped him fulfill his dreams. She was the only bright hope and source of constant encouragement in his life.
4. Divya Dutta in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag:
One of the most critical characters who enable Milkha Singh to achieve his goals is his sister. From giving away her share of milk to Milkha to standing up for him when her husband tries to beat him – she was an unconditional giver.
5. Karisma Kapoor in Fiza:
Fiza, the 2000 release, featuring Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan in lead roles portrayed the complex relationship of a brother and a sister. In the film, Fiza (Karisma), is in search of his brother, Amaan (Hrithik), who disappeared during the 1993 Bombay riots and turned to terrorism. Fiza has a mission to bring him back to his family and therefore, she goes to extents to find him. And in the end, she kills his brother to give him a dignified death.
Hetal Gada in Dhanak:
Dhanak is the film which describes that your sibling will never leave your side no matter what happens. They will go to any extent to help them accomplish the dreams. Such a sibling was Hetal Gada in the movie by Nagesh Kukunoor. Her visually impaired brother was everything for her. She did everything keeping in mind that with just months to go before his brother turns nine, she will get his eyes back.
