A Visit To One Of Delhi's Oldest Ramlilas

Ramlila, the dramatised enactment based on the Hindu epic Ramayana is what draws the crowds.

The lights are lit and the stage is set at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan near Red Fort.  As the name suggests, the iconic Maidan organises one of the oldest Ramlila fairs of the city. The grand fair is a huge attraction among both Delhiites and visitors alike. From a wide range of street food items to different kinds of amusement rides and games, the fair is the best place to be for youngsters and children. But it is Ramlila,  ,the dramatised enactment based on the Hindu epic Ramayana is what draws the crowds. From politicians to film stars, many celebrities take out time to participate in the event. The organisers say that around 50,000 people attend the event on any given day.

Around 30 years ago, Ram Lila which was organised at the maidan was very small scale event where only 500 people used to attend. But over the  years, things have become bigger and better. With live streaming and enhanced sets as well as costumes, Ramlila today has become hi-tech. Times may have changed but the enthusiasm for it continues unabated.
