With Permanent Cycle Stands, Delhi Metro Is Ramping Up Its Go Green Drive

These stands can park upto 30-40 bicycles and will be provided with a locking mechanism for the safety of bicycles.

Delhi Metro is going an extra-mile in promoting environment-friendly initiatives aiming to bring down pollution levels in the national capital region. Recently, DMRC announced its plan to run all its operations on solar energy by 2021, a target, if achieved, would make it the world’s first green energy metro rail network. Now to address issues of last-mile connectivity and provide commuters a healthy and eco-friendly option, Delhi Metro has introduced permanent bicycle stands at the parking lots of the metro stations. In April, stands were installed at 18 parking lots across different stations along the Delhi Metro network. These stands can park upto 30-40 bicycles and will be provided with a locking mechanism for the safety of bicycles.

The stations where permanent space for bicycle stands has been provided are Seelampur, Shahdara, Welcome, Rithala and Tis Hazari on the Red Line; Saket, Arjangarh, Chattarpur, on the Yellow Line; Dwarka Mor, Dwarka, Dwarka Sector 21 on the Blue Line. On the Green Line, the facility can be availed at Mundka, Nangloi, Peergarhi. The bicycle stands are also available at the parking lots of Tughlakabad, Badarpur, Sarita Vihar Metro stations on Violet Line and Okhla Bird Sanctuary station on Magenta Line, according to Hindustan Times.

The parking lots at Nawada, Uttam Nagar (E) and Vishwavidayala metro stations have also been identified for permanent bicycle stands which reports say will be installed within the next few days.

“This facility will be further extended to more stations in a phased manner. These permanent bicycle stands have the capacity of parking multiple bicycles and will be provided with a locking mechanism for the safety of bicycles,” a DMRC official told The Hindu.

DMRC, in association with some private operators, is already operating 20 bicycle sharing service stands (through operators) covering 19 stations across its network and 13 more stations have been identified for these bicycle sharing service (through private operator) which will be functional in a few weeks.
