Deshraj Patel, a farmer from MP’s Chattarpur, feared his daughter would not be able to overcome her disability. But his fears proved unfounded after Mamata wrote her BA first-year examination at a college in Chattarpur.
“Mamata was born with just one hand and that too was underdeveloped. We even wondered how she would survive, but she has proved us wrong”, Patel told The Times of India.
Mamata’s father exhorted her to study, helping her learn to write with her foot. The 19-year-old uses the toe of her left foot to hold a pen.
“My father taught me to write with my feet. In school, children use to bully me for writing this way, but now that I’ve reached college, I feel great,” she told ANI.
“Initially, I found it extremely difficult to write but gradually I picked up pace,” she added.
Last year, she cleared her class 12 board exams and is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree from Maharaja College. For her first year examination, Mamata had to travel about 18 kms from Talvampara, her uncle’s house.
Mamata says she wants to become a government servant and support her parents.
“I want to be educated. I want to work so that I can earn money to support my parents financially,” she told ANI adding that one shouldn’t let obstacles get in the way of their dreams.
