Yogendra Puranik is probably the first person from India to contest elections in Japan.

This 41-year-old is also contesting elections but NOT in India! Yogendra Puranik aka Yogi is probably the first Indian
to contest elections in Japan. The 41-year-old from Pune is contesting for the municipal elections in Tokyo. A retired banker, Yogi is contesting for Edogawa Municipal Corporation, a constituency where 4,500 Indians live. He’s a part of the Constituent Democratic Party of Japan. Yogi moved to Japan for higher studies in 1997 and has worked for various IT companies. He has been residing in Japan for 20 years now and aspires to run for Mayor in the next elections.
