In India, when it comes to superstitions even burglars have their own set of beliefs, which at times is taken a bit too far. A thief in Kerala is drawing eyeballs for his rather bizarre modus-operandi which includes breaking into the victim’s house naked with underpants on his head, The News Minute reported.
The state police on Saturday arrested 27-year-old Edwin John, who is accused of breaking into and robbing over 15 houses in the Neyattikara district of the Kerala capital.
John was first apprehended for questioning, however, after checking CCTV visuals of the crimes, the police soon realised,it was the ‘naked thief.’
“… From the visuals, we have understood that he takes his dress off completely and keeps it somewhere in his bike before entering any house,” The News Minute quoted a police official as saying.
John is a law student, studying in a college in Cheruvarakonam near Kanyakumari, and reportedly lived in a lodge in the area. Police suspect that he is involved in several cases of burglaries around Neyattinkara region.
“He was riding a Yamaha Fascino with a TN registration, which is most probably a stolen bike. The bikes keep changing as he steals one vehicle for the night, leaves it there and steals another one to escape getting caught…….,” he said.
Breaking into houses naked may be a bit too odd but there are several chaddi banyan Gangs operational across the country and thankfully they choose to cover their private parts.
Last year in July, Jharkhand Police detained nearly 100 suspected members of a Chaddi Banyan Gang with Rs 3 lakh in cash and a huge quantity of gold in state’s Jamtara district, The Telegraph reported.
“These members of the chaddi-baniyan gang, belonging to the nomadic Gulgulia community, committed loot and theft. They committed crime wearing undergarments,” a police official told this newspaper while the raids were still on,” Ranchi city SP Aman Kumar had told the daily.
There is another notorious Chaddi Banyan Gang operational in Mumbai that has been involved in several burglaries.
