Why Bengalis On Both Sides Can't Stop Talking About This World Cup Moment

The moment evoked a barrage of emotions from Bengalis from both sides of the border.

On Tuesday, before the high-octane Indian Bangaldesh ODI match started in Birmingham’s Edgbaston stadium, there was something that united both the teams. The stadium reverberated with two national anthems- both penned by Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. While Bangladeshis recited ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ or My Golden Bengal, created by Tagore in 1905, Indians crooned ‘Jana Gana Mana’, also composed by the polymath in 1911. Bangladesh adopted it as national anthem after the liberation war of 1971 while Jana Gana Mana became India’s national anthem on January 24, 1950 – two days before India became a republic. The moment evoked a barrage of emotions from Bengalis from both sides of the border. Many reminisced the bond between the two neighbouring nations, while others lauded Rabindranath Tagore’s invaluable role in shaping Bengal’s literary and cultural history.
