This 96-Year-Old Topper Scored 98% In Kerala Literacy Exam

She is the oldest candidate to have topped the exam.

Karthyayini Amma, a 96-year-old from Kerala is all set to meet chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on November 1. The nonagenarian who hails from Cheppad, Alappuzha will be felicitated for her remarkable achievement that has made India’s most literate state proud.

Karthyayini Amma has topped the Kerala literacy exam with scoring 98 percent marks. She was the oldest candidate among 43,330 students who took part in the exam which was conducted in August this year. The examination, as part of ‘Aksharalaksham’ mission of the state government, is conducted to ensure numerical cent percent literacy in Kerala.

Karthyayini, who has never attended any school was assisted by her instructor Sati Krishnan. Her instructor said that she is
a quick learner and good at memorising poems. She now plans to take class IV examination next year. She is now a certified literate and will receive a letter of merit from the chief minister.
