This 54-Year-Old Teacher In Haryana Has Reduced School Dropout Rates

In Haryana’s conservative district Mewat, an elementary school headmaster is the reason why the school has witnessed a reduction in dropouts, especially among girls.

54-year-old Basruddin Khan, who has been dedicatedly working towards bringing down the school dropout rate and tirelessly working towards filling up vacant benches was nominated for National Award for Teachers.

Khan, who teaches Maths and Science has worked towards tackling a number of issues young children experience in this Muslim-majority district including spreading awareness about vaccination. In order to ensure that girls don’t drop out of the school, he has tied up with an NGO to launch a program named Udaan.

He told The Times Of India,

“There is so much to play with in science and maths. Whenever something is taught practically, kids learn faster and get more curious about it. Then, there is no looking back.”

The attendance in villages including Jharpuri, Sirori and Tappan, the attendance has dramatically increased. In Jharpuri village, there were 20 students when he started teaching and the number rose to 57, by the time he left. In Government Model Sanskriti Senior School in Sirori, the numbers of students drastically shot up to 638 from 96, reports TOI.

Government Middle School located in Tappan where Khan is currently employed, he has successfully urged several NGOs and agencies to invest almost Rs 1.7 crore towards improving the school’s infrastructure.
