RIP Himanshu Roy: India Loses Its Supercop

The former ATS chief was undergoing treatment for cancer and and had been on medical leave for over a year

Former Maharashtra top cop Himanshu Roy has allegedly committed suicide. The 1988 batch IPS officer allegedly shot himself with his service revolver at his Mumbai home on Friday.

The former Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief was undergoing treatment for cancer and had been on medical leave for over a year. Roy is credited with cracking several high-profile cases. His investigations into 2013 IPL spot-fixing led to the arrest of Bindu Dara Singh for his alleged links with bookies.

He also solved Journalist J Dey murder case, Laila Khan murder case. His efforts led to the arrest of techie-turned-terrorist Anees Ansari who was planning to blow up the American School in Bandra.

Roy was instrumental in setting up Mumbai’s first Cyber Crime Cell taking anti-dacoity measures and establishing the women’s cell. In 2015, Roy lost his elite posting as ATS chief and was moved to the additional director general (housing), an insignificant role for an officer of his calibre.

Roy was moved after he and some of his colleagues wrote to the Maharashtra home department alleging poor treatment by seniors and favouritism in transfers. Speaking to NDTV, Former Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik said: “He was a fitness freak. He was at an advanced stage of cancer and couldn’t take it anymore. It is very, very unfortunate.”
