Manipur Elections 2017: Irom Sharmila whistles at Chief Minister Ibobi Singh during nomination day

The human rights activist will contest against Manipur Chief Minister and Congress candidate Okram Ibobi Singh from Thoubal

Irom Sharmila along with Najima Bibi and former student leader Bowang Kho filed their nominations as PRJA party member today at the DC office in Thoubal. As promised earlier, the entire PRJA team, led by party convener Erendro Leichombam and co-convener Irom Sharmila, blew the whistle at Ibobi Singh, while he was leaving after filing his nomination. They blew the whistle to tell the Chief Minister that his time of corruption in Manipur is up now!

Interestingly, the whistle is also the election sign of Irom’s party  People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) which was launched in October last year. The party has time and again accused Ibobi of massive corruption in the state.

The human rights activist will contest against Manipur Chief Minister and Congress candidate Okram Ibobi Singh from Thoubal in the Assembly elections which will be held next month. While launching her party, Sharmila had said that she would contest from two seats – Thoubal and Khurai.

Congress had released a list of 60 candidates for Manipur Assembly elections on February 3, with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh contesting Thoubal seat.

The 44-year-old activist, who is known for her fight against Armed Forces Special Powers Act, broke her 16-year-old hunger strike in August last year. After she broke her fast, Irom declared that she wants to become the Chief Minister so that she could press for repeal of the contentious AFSPA.

Her party has already started campaigning in Thoubal for Sharmila. However, there are no words about her contesting from Khurai. PRJA is likely to field 10 candidates for the Assembly elections to be held on March 4 and 8.Meanwhile, the Naga People’s Front (NPF), the ruling party in Nagaland, has announced names of 15 candidates for the Manipur Assembly e
