Meet Mumbai's slumdog scientist Prathamesh Hirve

Prathamesh Hirve was selected for ISRO out of 16,000 applicants

Remember the famous quote from Shahrukh Khan movie Om Shanti Om– “Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai … ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai?

Well, who knows it better than 25-year-old Prathamesh Hirve, who recently became the first ISRO engineer from Mumbai. But his journey hasn’t been an easy one.

Hirve lives in a 10×10 ft house in Filterpada slum. He completed his high-school education from a Marathi school and then earned a diploma in Electrical Engineering despite facing a language barrier. After that, he interned at L&T and Tata Powers, following which he got a degree in the same field.

After getting his degree, he tried to crack UPSC. Despite his failure, he applied at ISRO in 2016. But his application never made it beyond the waiting list. A year later, he applied in ISRO again. This time he got through.
