In May 2017, the Kerala High Court annulled Hadiya formerly Akhila’s (a Hindu) marriage to Shefin Jahan, suspecting it to be a case of ‘Love Jihad’. It handed over her custody to her father and for 6 months she was forcefully confined to her parent’s house.
On November 27, 2017, the Supreme Court granted her permission to continue her internship in Salem but her hostel has barred her from meeting her husband.
