Can We Please Stop Cracking The 'Marrying Kashmiri Girls' Joke ?

Vikram Singh Saini, an MLA from Khatauli said his party workers are happy as they'll now be able to marry “fair girls from Kashmir”

For this BJP lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh , the dilution of Article 370 and the special status of Jammu & Kashmir is making heads turn. Speaking at an event in Muzaffarnagar, Vikram Singh Saini, an MLA from Khatauli said his party workers are happy as they’ll now be able to marry “fair girls from Kashmir”

“Earlier there was a lot of atrocities against Kashmiri women, if a woman from there [Kashmir] got married to a man from Uttar Pradesh, her citizenship would be revoked. There was different citizenship for India and Kashmir. And the Muslim workers should celebrate here. Get married there to a fair Kashmiri girl. There should be celebrations. Everyone should celebrate… Be it Hindu or Muslims. This is something the entire country should be celebrating, the BJP leader said at the event organised to celebrate the dilution of Article 370.

Even before the removal of special status Kashmiri women marrying non-natives did not lose their residency as per a ruling by J&K HC in 2002. Not only the BJP lawmaker, many on Twitter also believed the same.
