Bengali Serials Are So Bad That CM Mamata Banerjee Had To Stage An Intervention

Mem Bou, the unfortunate foreigner bride of Bengali television, will finally rest in peace. The hideously-wigged titular character of a popular Bengali serial that launched a thousand memes last year, was made to grovel in front of a staggering collection of men of all shapes and sizes, roll in dirt and then sliced into two. Now, she has finally got her justice. The good men (and women) of Bengali serials, have been told off by Didi herself.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, an avid serial watcher, has described such content as “regressive.” “Very often we see in television serials that even today one person has three wives and family members conspiring against each other. Please do not show such things. Such negative things often influence people,” said Banerjee while communicating with the cable television operators during the cable television summit in Kolkata last week.

However, according to The Hindu, Chairperson of the State’s Women’s Commission Leena Gangopadhyay, who is also a noted scriptwriter of Bengali serials, felt that one shouldn’t dismiss all serials like this.

“We make serials for the common people and everyone has the right to express his or her personal opinion on them. The Chief Minister has done just that. But it would be wrong to think that all serials show negative content,” she said.
