20,000 Farmers In Mumbai Want To Be Heard. Are You Listening?

The protesting farmers are demanding compensation for drought-hit regions.

Over 20,000 farmers from different parts of Maharashtra have hit the streets of Mumbai in a two-day march, which began on November 21. The protesters led by Lok Sangharsh Morcha began their march from Thane which ended at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. They comprise farmers and tribals from North Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Ahmednagar who are demanding compensation for drought-hit regions.

Their long-pending list of demands also include:

1)  Implementation of Swaminathan Committee Report which will allow farmers to get control over resources like land and water which are required in agriculture.

2) An increase in minimum support price for crops

3) And a complete loan waiver for affected farmers

This is the third such mass protest in Maharashtra this year. In March, 25,000 farmers from All India Kisan Sabha had carried a protest to demand farm loan waiver. In July, dairy farmers protested to demand a hike in milk prices.

But are the authorities listening?
