Wonder Woman to be banned in Lebanon? Gal Gadot's Israeli roots irks some locals

A local Lebanese group is calling to ban Wonder Woman amid Israel-Lebanon tensions since the actress, Gal Gadot, is Israeli.

Wonder Woman is probably that one film that everyone was eagerly waiting for this year. However, some people might not be too happy with the arrival of lead actress Gal Gadot’s stunning new Wonder Woman. A Lebanese Group named Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon is seeking to ban the Warner Bros.’ production because of Gadot’s Israeli roots.

The tense relations between neighbouring countries Israel and Lebanon are no stranger to general knowledge. The two nations have been at odds for decades. The conflict has now dragged mainstream cinema into the picture by calling for a boycotting of Wonder Woman. “The main actress of #WonderWoman film is Israeli (Gal Gadot), which is against the Lebanese law,” stated the Lebanese group on a Facebook page.

Actress Gal Gadot, who plays the role of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman in the film, hails from Israel.

However, despite the call for a ban, there has been no official motion to keep Wonder Woman away from theatres in Lebanon. A Deadline report suggests that the DCEU movie has been scheduled to be screened in 15 theatres across the country.

This is not the first such incident where Gadot’s films have become a controversial subject for the Lebanese. Earlier, films like Furious 7, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Fast Five, et al were the faces of the Israel-Lebanon conflict with the same group even calling for a ban on BvS.

As per Lebanese laws, Israeli products are banned in the country given the ongoing feud. While the film is an American production, the lead actress Gal Gadot has become the face of a controversy. Earlier, the actress had spoken up on behalf of Israel’s military, where she has served time as well, during the 2014 Gaza-Israel conflict.

As of now, Wonder Woman is set for release with one theatre in Beirut screening the film on Wednesday followed by an official release on Thursday.
