The trailer for R Madhavan's Amazon show looks like a Breath(e) of fresh air for Indian TV

Let's hope that R Madhavan makes a comeback for his Hindi audience with Breathe.

The arrival of Netflix and Amazon Prime, was exciting for many of us younger members of the audience. We know of many people who have given up on Indian television. And with the launch of these two streaming services, it meant that the limited slots in channels, would open up avenues for edgier stuff. Excel Entertainment’s Inside Edge was an unequivocal win for Amazon with a second season announced too.

And if the trailer for R Madhavan-starrer Breathe is any indication, then Amazon Prime is going from strength to strength. The series starring Maddy, Amit Sadh and Sapna Pabbi in lead roles, has the set template of a desperate father being chased by a cop with a history of his own. And with an actor like Madhavan playing a negative role, Breathe is something I’m seriously excited about.

Amit Sadh too has emerged as a competent actor since his breakout in Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che. He’s gone on to work (albeit unsuccessfully) with Amitabh Bachchan in Sarkar 3, and Running Shaadi. R Madhavan on the other hand, appeared in last year’s terrific Vikram Vedha, opposite Vijay Sethupathi. And he seems to have brought a distinct edge and physicality to his role.

Netflix is soon going to launch their first original Indian series in the form of Sacred Games, led by Saif Ali Khan, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. And if Breathe comes through on the trailer’s promise, then Amazon Prime will be 2 up on Netflix’s no score. And that will only intensify the battle between the two streaming services – where the audience will win in the end with some great Indian content.
