This Award-Winning Film About A Transwoman Should Be Next On Your Watch-List

Kaushik Ganguly's Nagarkirtan won a special jury prize and Best Actor for Riddhi Sen at the 2017 National Awards. And it's set to release on February 15.

Kaushik Ganguly’s national award-winning film, Nagarkirtan, is finally seeing the light of the day. The film that won a special jury prize and Best Actor for Riddhi Sen at the 2017 National Awards, had been struggling to find a theatrical release. But now with the release date set for February 15, all the hard work seems to be paying off for the team.

Nagarkirtan explores the relationship between a flautist and a transwoman, and the young boy’s struggle to come out as a woman in front of the society. The film features Riddhi Sen playing the lead alongside Ritwick Chakroborty. In an earlier interview with The Indian Express, Sen spoke about watching films like The Danish Girl & Tootsie and reading a ‘lot of literature on the trans community’ as a means to prepare for the role.

Director Kaushik Ganguly has previously dealt with a similar theme in a film called Arekti Premer Golpo – that starred the late Rituparno Ghosh in the role of a transgender documentary filmmaker, based out of Delhi. Nagarkirtan has been shot by Sirsha Ray (Death In The Gunj) and that probably explains the tranquil frames in the trailer.

Here’s the trailer of Nagarkirtan:

Nagarkirtan releases on Februrary 15, 2019.
